How to write your medical personal statement
Update June 9, 2009: I have added a page on writing a personal statement for osteopathic medical schools. Click here
It can be hard trying to write your medical personal statement. I've been there. Don't worry. If you worry and panic, it will only prevent you from writing the best essay you can. Instead, focus on why you want to be doctor. It always helps to start there because your statement will about why you want to become a doctor.
Getting Started The first thing to think about is, "what are you going to write about?" That's the best place to start because you needdirection in order to write your statement. Well, AMCAS was nice enough to give the following prompts to think about as you write your statement: - Why have you selected the field of medicine?
- What motivates you to learn more about medicine?
- What do you want medical schools to know about you that has not been disclosed in another section of the application?

So, these prompts are excellent starts. Basically, you want to write about why you want to be a doctor. Okay, so how are you going to approach this? I suggest taking notes about past events and moments, where you thought, "This is why I want to be a doctor". Remember how I said it's important to get real life experience of volunteering and getting clinical experience in my previous post on extracurricular activities? Well, this where those experiences become important.

You want to be able to write about why you want to become a doctor from personal experiences. Don't mention how watching"ER" or whatever medical soap opera inspired you to become a doctor. I'm sure sometimes you feel inspired to become a doctor after watching tv, but honestly, admissions committee will not be impressed. They want to know real and personalexperiences. They want to get to know YOU. After all, you are paying them to read your statement. That's why you spend $50-$200 per school on applications right?
