Typical medical school interview questions

The following are typical medical school interview questions that I was asked. Don't wing your interview!Make sure you take a look at each question, answer them on your own first, and then practice!

Typical Questions

  • Why do you want to be a doctor?

  • How will handle the stress of medical school?

  • What was your most difficult class?

  • Explain your research/volunteer work/extra-curricular activity

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses

  • Why do want to attend our School of Medicine (make sure you research each school before going to the interview)

  • What do you think are the biggest problems with health care in the United States today?

  • If you could change one thing in your file, what would it be?

  • Tell me about yourself

  • How do you handle conflict?

  • What is your leadership style? Example?

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself

  • Name an ethical situation and what you did

  • What medically related experiences have you had?

  • Where do you see yourself in 10 years

Scenario Questions
  • Can compassion be taught and do you need it to be a successful doctor?

  • You have two patients, a convicted felon and a working mother. They both need a kidney transplant, but only one can have it. Who would you give it to?

  • Is pharamaceutical advertising ethical?

  • If medicine were a sport, what would it be be and why?

  • A few years down the road, your 8-year old son's friend takes your fish out of the aquarium. How do you respond to this situation?

The list goes on and on. The key is that the interview can be prepared for, but at the same time it can't. You can get asked random medical school interview questions that you never thought of.You need to keep cool. Sometimes, these questions are designed to throw you off to see how you respond. If you don't know the answer, be honest and admit it. It's better to admit than fake it. Interviewers will see right through you and they can count that against you.
