Allopathic (MD) GPA
In 2008, the average GPA of students who applied to allopathic (MD) medical school are the following:
Science GPA= 3.40 Non-science GPA= 3.63 Total GPA= 3.50
The avg GPA of students who were accepted and matriculated into allopathic (MD) medical schools are the following:
Science GPA= 3.60 Non-science GPA= 3.73 Total GPA= 3.66
Osteopathic (DO) GPA
In 2007, the avg GPA of students who applied to osteopathic(DO) medical school are the following:
Science GPA= 3.20 Overall GPA= 3.35
The avg GPA of students who were accepted and matriculated into osteopathic (DO) medical schools are the following:
Science GPA= 3.35 Non-science GPA= 3.55 Overall GPA= 3.45
If you notice, the avg GPA of those who applied is slightly lower than those who got accepted. In general, as you're applying to medical school, apply to schools where your GPA is similar to the average matriculated GPA. The GPA listed on this page is what you need to get into medical school and this is what you can consider a competitive GPA. Please understand that having this GPA will not ensure your acceptance to medical school. Other things will determine your application, such as your MCAT and extracurricular activities. Also, the bare minimum undergraduate GPA is not officially known, but in general, you want at least a 3.0 science GPA before you apply. Otherwise, you will get screened out even before you receive a secondary application. The source of the average scores is AAMC.
